The two-storey building located at
11 Sand Beach Lane, off Longe Street, Oworonshoki, Lagos, which is still under
construction, was said to have collapsed at about 11am, trapping all those
working on the site as at the time of the incident.
Although no life was lost incident
as a result of the timely arrival of rescue workers from both the State and
Federal Government, some of those who were trapped and later rescued sustained
varying degree of injuries.
At the last count, those trapped
were four teenagers identified as 12-year-old Monday Ahungbe, 13-year-old Jimoh
Adebiyi, 14-year-old Oba Alafia and 15-year-old Moses Atokiti, who were
assisting the six adult construction workers.
It was gathered that already the
owner of the collapsed building and the contractor in charge are allegedly on
the run, to evade possible arrest by the authorities.
As at press time, policemen from
Oworonsoki have condoned off the entire area to prevent hoodlums from
capitalising on the chaos to loot people's properties.
Confirming the incident, the
National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Spokesperson, South-west, Ibrahim
Farinloye, said the timely intervention of NEMA, officials of the Lagos State
Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), policemen and operatives of the National
Security and Civil Defence Corp (NSCDC), saved the lives of the victims.
He said although the teenagers
sustained minor injuries and were being attended to at Folabi Medical Centre,
Oworonshoki, two of the construction workers who sustained major wounds were
rushed to the intensive care unit of Gbagada General Hospital.
Also, LASEMA Spokesperson, Kehinde
Adebayo, said the casualties are
currently being treated at the government-owned hospital freely at the instance
of the state government.
