SEGUN ADENIYI: Yoruba, Igbo and Media Warriors

SEGUN ADENIYI
The Verdict By Olusegun Adeniyi. Email, olusegun.adeniyi@thisdaylive.com

The young Yoruba man was leaving office early to go and receive his visiting Igbo wife undergoing her National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) primary assignment in a neighbouring town when he encountered a co-worker who planted in him the seed of doubts that eventually destroyed a beautiful union and set his own life crashing down. COLLINS EDOMARAUSE: Does the Lagos Traffic Law Empower the Police to Kill?

IG, MOHAMMED ABUBAKAR
I was deeply pained Wednesday night to hear and see the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Umar Abubakar Manko, on television struggling to give convincing explanation or excuse to Lagosians on the condemnable action of one of his men, simply identified as Haruna, that led to the murder of a motorcyclist, Mr. Olalekan Ajayi, at Ikorodu earlier in the week. I was not just pained by Manko’s callous choice of words while attempting to justify the action of his killer cop, but enraged by his lack of remorse to the fact that a trigger-happy police personnel under his command had pulled the trigger that snuffed-off life from the victim, Ajayi.

FEATURES: A New Lease of Life for Policemen

New Police Estate at Idimu, Lagos
The deplorable state of police barracks across the nation has been of concern to many, especially the police authorities, Chiemelie Ezeobi writes on the current efforts of the Nigerian Police to turn the tide.

For many years he served meritoriously as a police officer. He had lived in the most dangerous part of the city where he continued to expose his family to the risk of the environment in which he lived as a serving police officer. After sometime he managed to get an apartment inside the police barracks, but the apartment was not in any way befitting for an officer of his rank. Unfortunately he died during a crossfire with armed robbers. So he died without having a house of his own and thus left his wife and five children without a roof over their heads. That was the story of a Nigerian police officer.
For the Police, the dream to own a house or an apartment has always been there. In most cases they die without fulfilling that dream.
