The death of a Chicago lottery winner has led to a murder investigation after a post-mortem examination found he died of cyanide poisoning.
Urooj Khan, 46, died suddenly as he was about to collect almost $425,000 (£264,000), but his death was initially attributed to natural causes.

In line with its ongoing effort at reforming and transforming the army into a formidable force capable of meeting the security challenges facing the country, the Nigerian Army has approved the promotion of 2,900 soldiers in the last one year.

This was disclosed yesterday by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt-Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika, at the Command Officers Mess, Asokoro, Abuja during the decoration of 37 senior officers (formerly colonels) to the rank of Brigadier Generals.

One million Syrians are going hungry and helpless due to the 22-month civil conflict in the country, the UN says.

The World Food Program (WFP) says it is helping 1.5 million Syrians, but continued fighting and an inability to use the port of Tartus to deliver food mean many people are not receiving aid.
The UN estimates that more than 60,000 people have been killed in the uprising, which began in March 2011.

About 60 suspected pipeline vandals have been arrested by operatives of the National Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Ikorodu area of Lagos State, while tampering with fuel pipelines that ran through Majidun.

The suspects were arrested few weeks after operatives of the Lagos State Taskforce on Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit raided Ikorodu suburbs in a manhunt for pipeline vandals.

Barely a day after an inferno razed down about 10 structures at the Makoko Waterfront Community, at the Yaba Local Government Area of Lagos State, a fresh fire yesterday gutted more structures at Okobaba Community, Ebute Meta area of the state.

The fire which rendered scores of people homeless razed down over 50 shanties and also devoured some parts of the saw-mill in the area thereby rendering many jobless too.

Navy Hands over 15-man Russian Crew to Police

The Nigerian Navy (NN) Monday handed over the 15-man Russian crew of the MV Myre Seadiver vessel to the police for further investigation and possible prosecution.

The vessel was arrested on October 19, last year, at the Lagos roadstead of the nation’s waterways by personnel of the NNS Andoni for illegal entry into the nation’s waterways as well as for non-declaration of cargo and possession of a cache of arms and ammunition.

The vessel, which departed from the port of Toliara Madagascar en route Conakry in Senegal, was intercepted on Nigerian waters with about 14 assorted AK47 rifles with 3,643 ammunition and 20 Benelli MRI 20 barrel with 4955 ammunition.

Security challenges, which have prompted the Federal Government to deploy troops to many parts of the federation, have forced Nigeria to scale down the number of men of the armed forces it will contribute to a sub-regional military contingent for peacekeeping in Mali.

THISDAY learnt yesterday that Nigeria would now contribute 450 soldiers to the contingent put together by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), down from the original 600 soldiers it had intended to contribute to the 3,300-strong troops.

Mrs. Elekiya Ayisat Giwa, the 87-year-old mother of the late Dele Giwa, yesterday gave up the ghost at a private hospital (Aruna Ogun) at the Ikorodu area of Lagos State after a brief illness.

She might not have died with her son Dele Giwa nearly 27 years ago but Madam Elekiya Ayisat Giwa lived with the memory of how he was brutally murdered, a memory according to her family that slowly killed her spirit until her body gave up finally yesterday.

Dele Giwa, a veteran journalist and the editor and founder of Newswatch Magazine, whose name still causes ripples in the journalistic world was killed in October 19, 1986, by a letter bomb, the first of its kind in Nigeria.
