Chaos erupted Tuesday at the Oshodi area of Lagos State when a speeding truck driver conveying sand to a construction site, crushed a pregnant woman and five others to death. This came barely a day after a tanker laden with water crushed five primary school pupils at the Ajah area of Lekki-Epe Expressway, Lagos.
The Oshodi incident which left five persons with varying degrees of injuries, was said to have occurred after the truck which allegedly belongs to the Lord's Chosen Church ran into three stationary vehicles loading at the motor park.
The injured persons have since been taken to an undisclosed hospital where they are currently undergoing treatment while the bodies of the deceased persons including the foetus of the pregnant woman were deposited at the Isolo General Hospital Morgue.
An eyewitness who was simply identified as Feyi said the driver of the truck lost control and ran into the vehicles including a commercial bus which were occupied by the six deceased persons.
Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ngozi Braide, said when police officers from Makinde Division led by the DPO arrived at the scene, they rushed the victims to the hospital.
She said, "The truck with registration no JJJ824XD owned by the Lord's Chosen Church, lost control, due to brake failure and ran into three stationary vehicles in the motor park.
"In the process, all the vehicles got damaged while five persons lost their lives and one of the deceased who was a pregnant woman had her fetus gush out, bringing the casualty figure to six.
"About five people were also injured and they are currently receiving treatment at LASUTH. We have apprehended Lawrence Nwodu, who is the driver of the truck. "
She added, "The four vehicles involved had been taken to LASTMA office while calm has also returned in the area as Policemen were able to curtail the situation.
"Members of the public, especially vehicle owners are warned to make sure that their vehicles are road worthy as this will help to stem the rising tide of fatal motor accidents"
